On Thursday, February 11, Mumbai Police authorized a directive ahead of Valentine’s Day which urged police stations across the city to increase patrolling on beaches, colleges and parks on the day.

This comes ahead of February 14 which is celebrated by people all over the world as Valentine’s Day. According to reports, this decision has been taken in order to prevent any untoward incidents in the run-up to Valentine’s Day.

Moreover, the officials have stated that there happens to be a possibility that right-wing organisations and political parties may hold protests, during which they often “harass young couples”. In addition, the officials have received instructions to ensure that such incidents do not happen in Mumbai.

In the past, there have been occurrences of such incidents when members of certain organizations have taken videos and photos of couples and posted them on social media in a bid to harass them.

Meanwhile, authorities believe that despite colleges being shut amidst the pandemic, students are reportedly expected to come on Valentine’s Day to celebrate the day. Furthermore, the officials have added that strict action will be taken against those who take the law into their own hands via acts of vandalism and beatings.

Valentine’s Day originated as a minor Western Christian feast day honouring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine and, through later folk traditions, has become a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world. Even though this day falls on February 14, the momentum of showering affection begins a week earlier.
