In less than two weeks, officers from the Naigaon police, which comes under Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) jurisdiction, prevented three suicide attempts. The officers acted quickly while playing their roles as both first responders and counsellors.
The incidents, which took place under the jurisdiction of the Naigaon police station in Palghar district, occurred between September 9 to 13, which is observed as Suicide Prevention Week.
Incident 1
The first incident involved a 16-year-old girl. On September 9, around 9 AM, the police were alerted about it through the emergency number 112. The girl had isolated herself in her home after an argument with her mother. She was about to hang herself from the ceiling.
Constable Santosh Ghuge reached the scene in time. He broke down the door and found her standing on a washing machine. Ghuge talked to her and managed to stop her. The police brought the girl and her mother to the police station and gave them counselling.
Incident 2
Another incident occurred in Mhatrewadi chawl in Juchandra area in Naigaon East on September 13. A 24-year-old woman attempted suicide in her apartment following a dispute with her husband. Neighbours entered the flat and helped bring her down, but she remained unresponsive.
Incident 3
In the third case, police received a call about a loud argument between a couple. Officer Ghuge responded. When he arrived at the 13th-floor apartment, he saw the 37-year-old woman about to jump from the gallery. Officer Ghuge pulled her to safety. The woman had grown frustrated with her husband’s unemployment.
The police have focused on faster responses to distress calls. When someone dials the emergency 112 number, it connects to an integrated command center. The call is then forwarded to the nearest on-duty officer.
