The Mumbai Railway Police have identified 38 accident-prone hotspots across the suburban railway network and assigned senior officers to monitor them as part of efforts to prevent accidents caused by passengers crossing railway tracks.
Of these, 27 hotspots are under Central Railway and 11 under Western Railway. Police have asked railway authorities to immediately close unauthorised entry points, install and strengthen fencing, repair damaged protective walls and raise the height of low barriers.
The Railway Police have also proposed foot overbridges, subways and road overbridges at vulnerable locations to provide safer alternatives for commuters. Regular follow-ups are being conducted with railway officials to speed up the work.
Passenger awareness is another key part of the campaign. Under the 'Khaki Sakhi' initiative, personnel are using banners and safety messages to discourage commuters from crossing tracks.
Railway stations are also witnessing public announcements and street plays highlighting the dangers of track crossing. Awareness programmes are being conducted in Mumbai schools, colleges and slum areas as well.
Meanwhile, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Mumbai Central Division, registered 2,581 cases during August against activities affecting passenger safety and convenience. The drive resulted in approximately Rs 32.26 lakh in fines.
The biggest action was against unauthorised track entry, with 985 people booked under Section 147 and Rs 4.92 lakh collected in fines.
The RPF also apprehended 83 people for unauthorised entry into ladies' coaches and 474 people for travelling in coaches reserved for Persons with Disabilities (PwD).
In addition, 774 unauthorised vendors were booked, while action was taken against illegal alcohol transportation, smoking, no-parking violations, poster pasting, footboard travel and unnecessary alarm-chain pulling.
The combined measures by the Mumbai Railway Police and RPF are aimed at reducing railway accidents, improving commuter safety and curbing rule violations across Mumbai's suburban rail network.
