According to a recent data published by the Government Railway Police (GRP), the number of fatalities on railroad lines in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has seen a significant increase in recent years.

Reports stated, 2,507 people lost their lives in accidents involving trains in the MMR in 2022, while 2,155 others sustained injuries.

The data also revealed that 700 people, including 648 men and 52 women, died after falling from moving trains or being struck by suburban trains. Among them, 190 deaths on the Western Railways (WR) and 510 deaths on the Central Railways (CR) were reported. Additionally, 1,026 people, including 812 males and 214 females, were injured after falling off moving trains.

This alarming rise in fatalities on railroad lines is not a new phenomenon. In fact, statistics show that the number of deaths in railway accidents has been steadily increasing since 2016.

In 2019, 611 people lost their lives in such accidents, compared to 711 deaths on railroad tracks in 2018.

On the other hand, officials exclaimed that the installation of escalators and barricades between platforms at suburban stations has helped reduce the fatalities caused by crossing tracks at stations.
