The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has removed the poster at the Bharatbhai Chawl in Goregaon East which stated that the civic body would not be responsible for any monsoon-related accidents in the area.

In a somewhat insensitive reminder, the BMC hung up posters at both entrances of the chawl, reminding them that the local residents should keep an eye on their children during the monsoon season. A year back, due to water-logging in the area as a consequence of incessant rainfall, one-and-a-half-year-old kid, Divyansh Singh, died as he got sucked into the drain. As the BMC put up posters, shirking responsibilities, an atmosphere of resentment was created amongst the dwellers who expressed anger to the media houses. Since then, the corporation has removed the posters. The place is now fitted with temporary restraining railings.

According to sources, every year during the monsoons, the locals would cover the hole with wooden planks, which would wash away every time during the rains. As per sources, several complaints had been made to the BMC in this regard. BMC’s P South administrative ward office and the area’s Shiv Sena corporator, Swapnil Tembwalkar, has claimed not to have received any written complaints about the drain lying uncovered.

However, in this case, the local corporators immediately wrote a letter to the P-South Municipal Department office in order to remove the billboards and posters immediately as it hurt the sentiments of the residents. The local corporators further demanded them to be thrown away, further adding that protective walls or protective nets should be installed in the nala to safeguard the people. Furthermore, additional measures should be taken in Goregaon where there is a high possibility of an accident, especially during the monsoons. After all of these complaints, the staffers of the maintenance department and the employees of the corporation went to the spot and removed the sign.
