As Mumbai witnessed incessant rainfall, Tulsi and Vihar, the lakes which supply water to the city, are on the verge of overflowing. This year, the rainfall in the catchment areas was higher, therefore, leading to the water bodies getting filled up. Moreover, these two lakes are also smaller compared to the other lakes that supply water to the city.

The storage capacity of Tulsi is 139.17 meters (8 thousand 86 million litres). The level of water in the lake on Sunday was 139.07 meters. Therefore, the lake had accumulated 7,903 million litres or 98 per cent water on Sunday. Meanwhile, the storage capacity of Vihar is 80.12 meters (17 thousand million litres). The level of water in the lake on Sunday was 77.96 meters. Tulsi is the smallest lake which has a share of 1 per cent in the total water supply. Both the lakes Tulsi and Vihar are located in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).

Apart from these two lakes, water is supplied to Mumbai from Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes. According to reports, lakes like Bhatsa only received rainfall of 8mm while Tansa and Modak Sagar received 2mm and 5mm of rainfall. Every year after the end of monsoon, on October 31, the water level in all the lakes is reviewed. On October 1, a total of 14 lakhs 47 thousand 363 million litres of water is required in all the lakes.

Meanwhile, In July alone, Mumbai has seen rainfall of 1,152.6mm while the monthly average rainfall is 840.7mm. As for the existing water across the lakes in the city, Mumbai had around 3.73 lakh million litres left as of recent figures, while the stock was at 7.06 lakh million litres on July 16, 2019. This has given rise to concerns of water shortage. However, the civic body has asserted that there is enough water supply to last for the upcoming months.
