The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken a beautification project to protect areas underneath the flyovers and make available a recreational place for the citizens.
This development came as several areas underneath the flyovers have been encroached upon by vagrants or beggars. It is a part of the municipality's ambitious "Mumbai Beautification Project."
Accordingly, the areas under the flyovers of the Western Express Highway (WEH) near Aarey and Oberoi Junction are undergoing a makeover.
A municipal official said that walkways, parks, playgrounds etc. will be developed here soon.
"The space under the flyover has been encroached by nomads and also it looks shabby. So we have proposed acrylic painting on the park, footpaths, water fountains, small play area and pillars. We have already started work under the flyover at Aarey. The beautification work under the Oberoi Junction flyover is under approval process," the official said.
The BMC is planning to illuminate and decorate these spaces to ensure that these spaces are not used by anti-social elements. Even after beautification, nomads can encroach on such places, so the municipality has also decided to appoint two security guards for the park.
The municipality has focused more on gardening under the Aarey flyover. This work will be completed in the next one and a half months, said the official.
P-Dakshin Assistant Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Akre said, “This work will be done in two phases. We have focused on areas below flyovers. The first phase of the project was taken up at Aarey flyover, while the proposal for Oberoi Junction beautification work will be sent for approval soon.”
The first park in the city under the flyover was created at Matunga. Another project has been taken up under the flyover connecting Goregaon and Kandivali via Western Express Highway (WEH).
