In a latest development, it has come to light that of the total road accidents taken in Maharashtra, more than 45 per cent of road accidents have been reported in Mumbai.
According to reports, out of the total 19,383 accidents occurred in the state, 5,333 fatalities and 9,120 people were injured between January to April. Meanwhile, Mumbai topped the numbers with 8,768 accidents. Following, Ahmednagar (554), Pune (539), Nashik (536), Kolhapur (406) among other districts and cities.
The transport department attributes the higher number of accidents the ongoing project works taking place around the city including Metro rail, road construction, drainage improvements etc. In addition, the roads are in pretty bad condition having potholes and barricades that also apparently contributed to accidents.
A RTO official said that the accidents in Mumbai aren't fatal but what we have found is that the number of people getting injured is more.
Moreover, experts claim that the current road conditions make the ride all the more dangerous during monsoon.
