Mumbai University (MU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in October 2016 to allot 8.5 acres of land for a proposed elevated road from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Vice-Chancellor of MU and ex-Congress parliamentarian Bhalchandra Mungekar had written to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari asking him about the land transfer. It is noteworthy that Koshyari is also the Chancellor of Mumbai University.

Following this, Mumbai University has issued a statement on Friday saying that, "In view of the increasing traffic near Mumbai’s Kalina Campus and the Bandra-Kurla Complex, a land parcel of about 34,715 square metres (8.5 acres), adjacent to the compound wall of Kalina Campus, is to be used for a 30-metre-wide connecting road. A handover of the land to MMRDA for an elevated road, that is from BKC to Hans Bhruga Road (Kurla), was also under consideration of the Government of Maharashtra. Subsequent to this, the government has approved the MoU between the University of Mumbai and Commissioner MMRDA, which was effected under section (1)(d) of the Maharashtra Universities Act 1994". Through this statement, Mumbai University has maintained that the land transfer deal was completely legal.

Notably, the existing building in Mumbai University is also going to witness a major revamp. MMRDA has taken up this project on a priority and will redevelop it in phases. In the first phase, they will focus on students and will include adding more hostels. Department renovation and restoration of the dilapidated building are also on the cards in this phase. While the second phase will focus on teachers and the development of the remaining building.
