Till last month, vehicle robbery in Mumbai rose significantly in contrast to the equivalent time frame in the last two years. Meaning that the present number is greater than that of car burglaries reported in 2019.
Mumbai Police’s data, based on a report by The Indian Express highlighted that till July 2021 case numbers rose from 1,359 to 1,898 from last July, which is significantly higher by 539 cases. In 2019, till July, nearly 1,560 cases were lodged. This number is lower than that of this year.
According to the report, a police officer who had offered his services in the Property Cell that probes motor vehicles robberies, by inter-state groups, stated that due to the pandemic, last year, a lockdown was in place which hindered the movement of vehicles. In addition to this, with the many “nakabandi” points, robberies numbers fell. He, however, then elucidated that this year the restrictions have been eased and with the pandemic, the action of the police has taken a blow. On priority this year, many cases have been lodged against those who flouted the lockdown rules that were in place to curb the spread of the virus. This took considerable time from the police’s duty, unlike the situation in 2019.
Based on an RTI response provided to The Indian Express, earlier this year, of the 2,801 motor vehicle robbery instances in 2020, 72% were pertaining to two-wheelers. The majority of the vehicle robberies was in Goregaon to Dahisar trailed by Bandra to Jogeshwari. The narrative stated that in the past three years, motors valuing Rs 38.62 cr weren’t recovered.
