Mumbai’s metro expansion has picked up fresh momentum with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) initiating a series of critical actions aimed at bolstering the city’s mass transit system. With trial runs already in progress on Metro Lines 2B and 9, attention is now shifting to the upcoming Metro Lines 4 and 4A, as new tenders and inspection phases mark the city’s steady march towards integrated connectivity.

An e-tender was recently floated by MMRDA for the transport of commissioned and uncommissioned metro rail cars along with essential equipment for Metro Lines 4 and 4A. The contract, estimated at ₹8.28 crore excluding GST, requires an Earnest Money Deposit of ₹16.56 lakh and carries a completion period of 24 months, which may be extended by an additional 12 months. The submission deadline for bids has been set for July 30, 2025.

Metro Line 4, which spans 32.3 kilometres from Wadala to Kasarvadavali, is a fully elevated route comprising 30 stations. It has been strategically planned to offer seamless interchange with the Eastern Express Highway, Central Railway, Monorail, and upcoming metro corridors including Lines 2B, 5, and 6. Once operational, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time across the eastern suburbs by as much as 75%. The adjoining 4A segment will extend the route by 2.7 kilometres to Gaimukh, with two more stations enhancing reach into the Thane region.

While infrastructural preparations are underway on these upcoming routes, progress has also been made on the safety front. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has commenced formal inspections of Metro Lines 2B and 9—a key prerequisite to passenger operations. These inspections, expected to continue until July 4, are focused on evaluating components such as overhead electrification, track integrity, signalling, and overall civil construction. A detailed checklist of compliance measures is likely to be issued following the preliminary evaluation, with final certification to follow.

Phase 1 of Metro Line 2B runs over 5.39 kilometres and includes stations such as Mandale, Mankhurd, and Diamond Garden. Metro Line 9’s initial stretch covers 4.4 kilometres, connecting Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon via Pandurangwadi and Miragaon. With trials, tenders, and inspections aligning in parallel, Mumbai’s metro blueprint is steadily moving from planning to execution—bringing the city closer to its long-term vision of fast, reliable, and inclusive urban mobility.
