In the Maharashtra assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its workers carried out a systematic attack on democracy through technology. Senior leader and MLA Jitendra Awhad of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) has alleged that large-scale changes were made in the voter list to benefit the BJP.

In the backdrop of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, a representation was submitted by Maha Vikas Aghadi to the Central Election Commission and the State Election Commission on October 19. Citing that statement, Awhad has again accused the Election Commission.

What happened in the Maharashtra assembly elections was not just electoral malpractice, but a systematic attack on the democratic system with the help of technology, said Awhad.

On October 19, 2024, even before the start of voting, the Maha Vikas Aghadi formally alerted the Election Commission that the BJP was manipulating voter lists on a large scale in several constituencies. "We had given a complaint minus prior notice to the Election Commission before the election, not after the election," said Awhad.

Awhad further said, "In our complaint, BJP workers were using digital tools to identify anti-BJP voters and remove their names. We had given detailed information to the Election Commission that the names of fake BJP-supporting voters were being included in the voter list using fake Aadhaar cards and manipulated data.

"Opposition voters were marked in red, while BJP supporters were marked in green. These lists of the Election Commission were uploaded on a private server or private system. The names of at least ten thousand fake BJP supporters were included in the voter list in each constituency through cyber cafes or bridge offices. Interestingly, an Election Commission officer filed an FIR in Dharashiv on October 17, 2024, after the fake voter registrations were exposed in Tuljapur.

"We had presented concrete evidence of how names of fake voters were inserted into the voter lists and names of Maha Vikas Aghadi supporters were removed in 13 constituencies including Shirdi, Chandrapur, Kothrud, Nagpur, Gondia etc. Still, the Election Commission remained silent".

"The Election Commission ignored all these things. But we will not remain silent, we will not allow the BJP to destroy our Constitution and democracy. We will fight to save democracy, we will not give up. Under no circumstances will we save the Indian Constitution and the institutions that are meant to protect democracy and not allow them to be destroyed", said Awhad.
