Heavy rains in the state over the last three to four days have led to flooding in many areas. The water has entered the fields, causing major damage to crops and washing away standing crops. It is understood that heavy rains have caused huge damage to crops covering more than 1.5 million acres in the state.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Harshvardhan Sapkal has demanded that a wet drought be declared in view of the current situation in the state and that farmers be given immediate assistance of INR50,000 per hectare.

In a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Congress state president Harshavardhan Sapkal stated that around 17 districts in Marathwada, Vidarbha, and Western Maharashtra have been badly affected by recent heavy rains. North Maharashtra and Konkan have also suffered significant damage.

Major crops such as jowar, bajra, urad, maize, soybean, moong, cotton, tur, as well as fruits and vegetables, have been heavily damaged. Thousands of hectares of sugarcane have also been hit hard. In some areas, farmers have lost their livestock, and there has even been loss of life in Nanded district.

Sapkal added that farmers, already struggling with various issues, are now facing another blow from nature.

Although the state government has ordered crop damage assessments (panchnamas), Sapkal said that the government should set aside rules and conditions during this difficult time and provide immediate help to the affected farmers.
