Amid declining water reserves and forecasts of below-normal rainfall, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced water cuts as part of its planning measures.
Meanwhile, several corporators have moved a proposal demanding urgent steps to tackle the situation in the upcoming civic meeting. As of May 5, the total water stock in Mumbai’s seven lakes stands at 3.71 lakh million litres (25.66%), compared to 3.28 lakh ML (22.66%) during the same period last year and 2.53 lakh ML (17.54%) in 2024.
With a daily supply of around 4,100 ML, the current reserves are expected to last for nearly 90 days, though concerns remain.
With the possible impact of El Niño on the monsoon leading to deficient rainfall, the BMC has announced a 10% water cut from May 15 to ensure supply lasts until August. However, corporators have stressed that cuts alone are not enough and have called for immediate and concrete long-term measures to prevent a worsening water crisis in the future.
