Mumbaikars may face water shortage in the coming days. The water storage in the seven dams which supplies water to Mumbai is decreasing and has reached all time low level in the past three years. The total water stock remaining in all dams is nearly 10 per cent.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, as on May 23, Mumbai’s water stock stood at 10.28 per cent. On the same day in 2023, the city’s water stock stood at 15.99 per cent; whereas 20.63 per cent in 2022.

However, the current water stock is adequate to last till July 3. Owing to this, BMC has ruled out the possibility of imposing the water cut in Mumbai. The officials also maintained that they would consult with the India Meteorology Department (IMD) before announcing a cut. Besides, a review of the water stock will be taken again in the first week of June as monsoon in Mumbai is expected to arrive by that time, officials added.

During the monsoon, the catchment areas of these lakes get filled with water and the overall stock in these lakes is equated to the actual water stock of Mumbai.

Moreover, it is pertinent to note that earlier this month, the state government’s irrigation department had approved the BMC’s request to use a reserve water stock of 1.37 lakh MLD from Bhatsa Dam and 91,130 lakh MLD from Upper Vaitarna Dam.
