After working through technical hurdles, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finally completed the work on the main connection of 4000 mm pipeline to water treatment plant in Bhandup complex.

The filtration plant, which has a capacity to treat 1,910 million liters (ml) of water per day, was shut down for more than 24 hours for work for the first time in the last 42 years, a municipal official said.

Explaining further, civic official stated that the interrupted water supply in 12 wards will resumed from Tuesday midnight. Water supply was to resume by at 10 am on Tuesday but it was delayed. BMC said supply was being resumed slowly to all areas. A team of engineers was formed to carry out work at eight major locations at the complex and at 30 locations in the city and western suburbs.

The municipality supplies 3,850 ml of water to the city daily from seven lakes. A large part of the city is supplied with water from the water treatment plant in the Bhandup complex. The municipal corporation had taken up the work of adding additional water lines, installing valves on various pipelines connected to the complex and repairing leaks to improve water supply.

The work was started on Monday morning and was expected to be completed in 24 hours, but was delayed by eight hours due to technical hurdles, a municipal official said.

“The filtration plant shut down for the first time in 42 years so we had to work on many aspects. The de-watering process took time and we had to work with some old valves. A team of engineers was formed to work at eight major locations in the Bhandup complex and 30 locations in the city and western suburbs," said a municipal official from the hydraulics department.

The civic body said pressure maybe reduced till February 4 and citizens were requested to cooperate. Moreover, citizens have been requested to boil water for the next few days.
