The Western Railway has significantly expanded its pre-monsoon preparations in Mumbai to minimize disruptions to the city’s crucial suburban train services during the rainy season.

Recognising that waterlogging is one of the biggest causes of delays, the railway authorities are focusing on preventive action well in advance.

This includes large-scale cleaning of drains, removal of silt and debris, and upgrading drainage infrastructure along railway tracks to ensure smooth flow of rainwater. By recognising choke points early, officials aim to reduce the risk of flooding on tracks that often halts train movement.

In addition to routine maintenance, Western Railway is deploying extra dewatering pumps, constructing improved drainage channels, and adopting modern engineering solutions such as micro-tunnelling to enhance water discharge capacity.

The railway is also leveraging technology by installing flood monitoring systems and sensors to track water levels in real time, allowing for quicker response during heavy rainfall. Coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is another key aspect of the plan, as many flooding issues originate outside railway boundaries. Through joint efforts, both agencies aim to ensure that excess rainwater is efficiently diverted.

Overall, these proactive and technology-driven measures highlight a stronger and more strategic approach compared to previous years.
