In a recent development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to keep municipal amenity centres across all 25 wards in Mumbai open on Sundays and public holidays. This move comes as the next week will be the last week of property tax collection. The week coincides with holidays such as Good Friday, Holi, and Rangpanchami.

BMC's goal is to get INR 2978 crore in tax by March 31. To ensure smooth operations and assist the public, the BMC tax assessment department staff will continue to work from the ward office. They will continue to serve people and solve their issues.

For the fiscal year 2023–2024, the BMC's tax department has been facing challenges in collecting property tax. To encourage taxpayers to file their taxes on time, civic body sent out notices to defaulters last month and ran advertisements.

As property tax is the BMC's second-largest source of income, the authorities are actively pursuing major defaulters to meet their targets.

The BMC recently released the list of the top 10 businesses that paid their property taxes through March 20. New Look Construction Private Limited, Shree Sai Group of Companies, and Kalpataru Retail Ventures Pvt. Ltd. were among the top contributors.

Furthermore, BMC collected a record-breaking INR 100 crore in property tax in a single day on Wednesday. However, the civic body is still struggling to reach the objective of INR 2978 crore by March 31 and has only recovered 35% of the tax for 2023–2024.

Due to the withdrawal of provisional bills that had been issued with a 20% spike in December 2023, the original forecast of INR 6,000 crore for property tax income for the current fiscal year was lowered to INR 4500 crore.
