To increase ridership at the Aarey-JVLR metro station, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is planning to build a ropeway to Sanjay Gandhi National Park via Film City.

The MMRC is tasked with building, operating and maintaining the Mumbai Metro 3 or Aqua Line. The Aqua Line is partially operational between Aarey-JVLR and Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli.

Low ridership has been a concern for the metro line since it was launched in October 2024. The proposed ropeway system will not only serve tourists but also daily commuters at Dindoshi and Yashodham junctions of General Arun Kumar Vaidya Road, also known as the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road.

"We propose to develop a ropeway system to connect the Aarey metro station of Mumbai Metro 3 to Film City in Goregaon, with possible extension up to Sanjay Gandhi National Park," senior MMRC official told Hindustan Times.

He added, "The project aims to improve last-mile connectivity to Film City, a major employment and tourist destination, and surrounding areas, which currently suffer from limited public transport facilities and road congestion."

Officials expect the 3-km-long ropeway to extend travel beyond the Aarey-JVLR Metro station, across the Aarey hills. The final work on the alignment is currently underway.

"This will serve daily commuters, tourists and industry professionals and will reduce land acquisition and environmental disruption," the official added.
