About 30,000 contract employees working in the National Health Mission under the Public Health Department have started a protest in various districts since October 25 for the main demand of adjustment in permanent service. A state-level protest has been called for two days at Azad Maidan in Mumbai to draw the attention of the state government.


In the Department of Public Health and Family Welfare since 2007, posts have been made on contractual basis in various categories under the National Health Mission. Many employees have been working for more than 10 to 15 years. All the employees who are working on contract basis have been selected through prescribed method like examination, interview. At present, more than 40 thousand posts are vacant across the state and the main demand of the protesters is that the employees working under NHM should be adjusted in these vacancies.

Since 2009, contractual workers have been presenting their various demands through constitutional channels. The states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Goa, Manipur in the country have implemented facilities such as equal pay scale, leave act, service guarantee till fixed retirement for the contractual employees working in National Health Mission. The protesting employees are demanding that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Health Minister Tanaji Sawant look into this issue and give justice to the contract employees.
