According to a survey carried out by the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) in Mumbai, only 335 of the 30000 hoardings in the area were built legally. These unauthorized constructions have impeded drivers' vision and caused various accidents. To get rid of them, the municipal corporation will act soon.

After several fatal accidents and complaints of huge banners, billboards, and hoardings obstructing the view of drivers, the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation conducted a survey and found that in the city out of 30,000 hoardings, only 335 are standing legally erect.

The hoardings are mostly about advertising some products or promoting something. The Traffic police said that these hoardings have caused several accidents as they block signals and cause distraction while driving.

Last week, the traffic police sent a letter to the VVCMC requesting the removal of the hoardings that are making it difficult for drivers to see traffic signals or vehicles approaching from the opposite direction, endangering their lives.

A traffic police official said that they had received several complaints from drivers against hoardings obstructing the view. The officials then conducted a survey and found that at several places, these banners were put up without opting for a no objection certificate (NOC) from the traffic police department.

One needs to get a no objection certificate from the traffic department and request permission from VVCMC in order to illegally erect a banner or hoarding in the city.

Palghar MP Rajendra Gavit said that In addition to posing a risk to motorist safety, these unlawful hoardings are costing the government a significant amount of loss. In order to stop these unlawful hoardings right away, he will write to the VVCMC.

Employees of the civic body stated that when the municipal corporation was established in 2009, there was no department in charge of granting permission for hoardings. Nevertheless, during the previous two years, the department responsible for hoardings in the area was established, and 335 people were granted permission to erect them. The VVCMC launched a campaign in 2023 to remove unlawful hoardings, but the activity was put on hold during the rainy season.

According to Sangratna Khillare, the deputy municipal commissioner, they would start the campaign over and remove all unauthorized hoardings. According to Khillare, they will take strict action against those who put up illegal hoardings.

City guardian minister Deepak Kesarkar recently addressed the problem of multiple illegal hoardings erected throughout the city, particularly near the BMC headquarters, and promised that removal action would be taken as soon as possible.

On October 24, thousands of people turned out for the annual Dussehra rally organized by the Shiv Sena, which is led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, at Azad Maidan, located near the BMC headquarters.

There were several unlawful hoardings and flags erected around the venue in front of the BMC headquarters, and at BEST bus stops near the venue. Typically, the BMC removes these banners or posters, but if it isn't done, it ought to be done as soon as possible, said Kesarkar.
