The death toll from a construction accident in Subhash Nagar, Chembur has risen to three, following the death of another injured worker on Wednesday. The tragedy occurred on February 28 at an under‑construction building, when a makeshift wooden platform on the sixth floor collapsed, causing six labourers to fall.
The victims were rushed to nearby hospitals immediately. One worker died at the site, another at Sion Hospital, and the third a 22‑year-old passed away on Wednesday afternoon. Among the surviving injured, one remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit, while two others are receiving treatment and are reported to be stable.
The Mumbai police have registered a case under sections relating to negligence and endangering human life. Notices have been issued to six individuals connected to the construction site, including the main contractor, site engineer, supervisor, and labour contractor, while two others remain at large. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The collapse has sparked concerns about safety standards at construction sites, particularly the use of temporary platforms and inadequate safety measures. Authorities and activists are calling for stricter enforcement of regulations to protect workers and prevent similar accidents in the future.
