Mumbai Traffic Police took action against 18,818 motorists for violating traffic rules during the Dahi Handi celebrations across Mumbai, Thane and neighbouring areas on Saturday. A total of Rs 1.92 crore was collected in fines through e-challans.
The highest number of violations involved driving without helmets, with 3,249 motorists penalised. Police also issued 3,727 challans for vehicles obstructing traffic and 1,478 for jumping signals.
Other violations included driving on the wrong side of the road, entering restricted or one-way roads, triple riding on two-wheelers and drunk driving. Police recorded 734 cases of wrong-side driving, 476 cases involving restricted or one-way roads, 301 cases of triple riding and 25 cases of drunk driving.
Traffic police were deployed at several locations to manage congestion as Govinda groups travelled on motorcycles and other vehicles after participating in Dahi Handi celebrations.
In Mulund, police stopped several Govinda groups returning from celebrations using barricades. Action was taken against riders for travelling without helmets and for triple riding. The enforcement led to arguments between some Govindas and police personnel at a few locations.
The Mumbai Traffic Police said the action was aimed at maintaining road safety and preventing traffic disruptions during the festival. Last year, traffic police had taken action against 10,051 Govindas for traffic violations and imposed fines amounting to Rs 1.13 crore.
