The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning two additional ring roads, together spanning 307 km, taking the proposed network from seven to nine corridors and strengthening connectivity across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and the wider Metropolitan Region.
The expanded network will connect major roads, sea links, tunnels and existing corridors into a more seamless road network, creating more route options for Mumbaikars and making journeys more efficient.
The ring road network is aimed at moving beyond individual infrastructure projects and developing the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region as an integrated road network. The initiative is expected to improve connectivity, facilitate smoother movement of commuters and freight, and reduce travel time across the region.
According to Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, “The Ring Road approach will offer alternative routes, reduce travel times and, most importantly, give people back something truly precious, their time.”
The expanded network is expected to play a key role in creating a more connected, efficient and integrated Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
