Passengers travelling from Mumbai are likely to face additional inconvenience as flight operations are being redistributed from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport's Terminal 1 as part of its redevelopment plan.
From October 1, around 30 per cent of international flight movements are expected to be shifted to Navi Mumbai International Airport. In addition, from October 25, around one-third of the flights currently operating from Terminal 1 will be moved to Terminal 2.
The changes are being implemented ahead of the planned redevelopment of Terminal 1. The airport operator has informed the Civil Aviation Ministry that demolition of the northern section of Terminal 1B is scheduled to begin on January 15, 2027.
Several airlines, including Air India Express, IndiGo and Akasa Air, have already begun shifting some services to Navi Mumbai. Some morning flights to destinations such as Delhi, Bengaluru and Kochi are among the services affected.
The shift has raised concerns among passengers, particularly those travelling from Mumbai's eastern and western suburbs. Navi Mumbai International Airport is considerably farther for many Mumbai residents, potentially increasing both travel time and transportation costs.
Passengers have also complained about limited public transport options to the new airport, leaving many dependent on private taxis. The additional journey is expected to be particularly inconvenient during the upcoming festive season when air travel demand traditionally rises.
Tourism industry representatives have also expressed concern that changes to flight operations, including services to Kochi, could affect tourist demand.
The airport operator has said that the redistribution of flights is being planned to minimise disruption during the redevelopment. A transition group has also been proposed to coordinate with airlines and other stakeholders and reduce inconvenience to passengers.
Passengers are advised to check their flight terminal and departure airport with their airline before travelling, particularly for journeys booked around the transition dates.
