Although it is predicted that the rainy season will start later than usual this year, yet under the guidance of Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, the pre-monsoon sewer cleaning works have been started from the beginning of April.

Pre-monsoon sewer cleaning involves clearing the silt from the drains and ensuring that there is no obstruction to the flow of water and this work is included in the daily cleaning work. This work has been started through the contractors of 96 groups doing daily cleaning and 65 percent of the work has been completed.

In pre-monsoon sewer cleaning, the dry soil or wet soil i.e. silt is removed from the sewers and kept beside the sewers and the contractors are instructed to pick up the dry soil within 24 hours and the wet soil i.e. silt immediately after drying. It has been directed that no laxity will be tolerated and punitive action has also been indicated.

A total of 5,94,583 running metres of sewers are being cleaned

A total of 5,94,583 running metres of sewers are being cleaned in 8 divisions of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and the sanitation officers and sanitation inspectors of the respective departments are keeping a close eye on this work. After cleaning the drains till October 31, the rain water in the drains will be prevented from flowing, so that if there are obstacles in the flow of water, it will be the responsibility of the concerned contractor to remove them.

Contractor to provide safety materials like gloves and gumboots to the cleaning workers

All the contractors have been informed that it is necessary to display the work board at the place where the sewer cleaning work is going on and it is also the responsibility of the contractor to provide safety materials like gloves and gumboots to the cleaning workers. In some places, despite the provision of safety materials, it is observed that the workers are working without using them and such pictures are being received by the aware citizens. In accordance with this, instructions have been given to the contractors and municipal sanitation officers and sanitation inspectors to ensure that the materials provided to the workers are useful for their safety and health and should be used by them.

Similarly, it is necessary for workers to wash their hands with soap before eating for health reasons and the contractors have been instructed to provide them with the necessary materials. Also, keeping in mind the current increase in temperature, instructions have been given to provide hats and accessories to the workers. Contractors have also been directed to take a worker to the nearest municipal civic health centre or hospital if he/she develops symptoms like cold, cough, fever.

It is also directed that after opening the cover of rain drains for cleaning, they should be properly closed every evening after completion of work. After the cleaning of the sewers is complete, the number 23 is written in a circle on the lids of the sewers in yellow colour to symbolise the year 2023.
