All schools and colleges in Navi Mumbai have been asked to conduct third-party safety audits. They will have to submit the audit reports to their local police stations. This order has come from the Navi Mumbai Police as part of efforts to protect students.
A total of 149 schools and colleges under Zone I joined a meeting on Monday, April 28. The meeting was held at the Marathi Sahitya Sanskruti and Kala Mandal auditorium in Vashi. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Pankaj Dahane led the session.
Dahane reviewed the current safety rules followed by schools and colleges. He told them to strictly follow a government circular. This circular is issued by the Maharashtra government.
The circular includes rules made to protect students, especially from sexual abuse. It asks schools to install CCTV cameras. It also tells them to do background checks on staff. Schools must take steps to prevent abuse.
Dahane said schools must work closely with their local police. He said rules must not only be followed but also be done properly. He asked school committees and police to work together more closely.
The meeting had many attendees. Senior inspectors from all ten police stations in Zone I were present. Assistant commissioners of police from the Vashi and Turbhe areas also came. Principals, headmasters, and college administrators also attended.
As per reports, officials at the meeting also spoke about teaching students and staff how to see and report signs of abuse. Dahane said schools must not work alone. He said they must work with police to keep students safe.
The move comes after a recent case of sexual abuse involving a 4-year-old boy. The boy was from a CBSE school in Seawoods.
