Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is set to make history with the opening of India's first civic-administered old age home. The facility, located in Seawoods, is nearing completion and expected to be ready for senior citizens by the end of May.

The project began as soon as NMMC obtained the plot from CIDCO with a budget of INR 4.11 crore for the 9,763 sq ft building space. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a delay in the completion schedule of 2022. Despite the setback, construction is moving quickly.

Municipal commissioner Rajesh Narvekar highlighted the need for such facilities in today's society, with changing lifestyles, nuclear families, and the breakdown of joint family systems leading to a rise in the number of old age homes. Narvekar stressed that senior citizens deserve help, respect, and a high standard of living, and that NMMC's various programmes for senior citizens, including activity centres, have been well-executed.

Dilawar Pangarkar, an active office bearer of a senior citizens association in Kopar Khairane, welcomed NMMC's initiative. He stated that some senior citizens find it difficult to stay with their families, have families outside the country, or have no one to care for them.

The Seawoods old age home would provide shelter for those without family members or unable to live with them. Pangarkar has no doubt that the facility will have high-quality amenities and set a standard for public organisations in India.
