An initiative to collect old but usable clothes was successfully organised at Sahitya Mandir Hall in Vashi through the joint efforts of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Project Mumbai, and the Marathi Sahitya, Sanskriti va Kala Mandal (Vashi).
The drive received an overwhelming response, with Navi Mumbai residents donating a large quantity of wearable garments. Around 813.3 kilograms of clothing were collected and sent to the Textile Recovery Facility (TRF) at CBD Belapur for recycling and reuse, preventing them from ending up in landfills.
The TRF, operated in collaboration with the Textile Committee under the Union Ministry of Textiles and NMMC, focuses on collecting, sorting, and upcycling discarded textiles into new products, significantly reducing textile waste. The initiative also creates employment opportunities for women from Self-Help Groups, with support from partners like the SBI Foundation and Tisser India.
Guided by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, the project emphasises public participation and sustainable practices. Clothes collected from housing societies, residential areas, and 3R centers are carefully processed for reuse, contributing to both efficient waste management and environmental conservation.
The drive was led by the Marathi Literature, Culture, and Arts Circle of Vashi, with active support from Project Mumbai. Plastic waste was also collected and sent for recycling. Officials including Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar and Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Dr. Ajay Gadade, along with several other contributors, supported the initiative.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation expressed gratitude to citizens for their participation and encouraged continued efforts toward adopting eco-friendly habits and building a cleaner, greener city.
