The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Friday, July 24, sealed off the Navjivan co-op housing society after a recent spike in the cases of coronavirus.

According to sources, Prashant Gaikwad, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of the D ward, speaking to The Times of India, stated that there were at least 60 cases in the society, adding that individually sealing each of the buildings was not working anymore in containing the spread of the disease as the residents were not following the protocols of being in-home quarantine.

Of the 18 buildings that have been sealed, seventeen are residential and one has offices. The buildings have 11 storeys. Navjivan co-op housing society has over a dozen gates and a continual floating population.

According to the data released by the BMC, as of July 18, there that more than 6,000 buildings in Mumbai and 691 areas in the city which were sealed and marked as containment zones. Observing the decline in the number of cases, the BMC has also delisted 11,000 buildings and 575 areas from the list of containment zones or red zones in Mumbai.

Areas like Borivali, Kandivali, Andheri, Malad, Dahisar, and others have the highest number of cases or growth rate. Keeping this in mind, the civic body has imposed strict restrictions to ensure that safety is maintained. Moreover, lakhs of people living in these areas and buildings have been affected as they have been sealed by officials.

Meanwhile, on Friday, July 24, Maharashtra recorded 9,615 fresh cases of the coronavirus, propelling the state's COVID-19 tally to 3,57,117. At the moment, there are 1,43,714 active cases in the state. With 5,714 COVID-19 patients getting discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 1,99,967.
