The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday, May 10, said that the civic body would require between 30-45 days to complete the pre-poll process and be logistically ready before the actual voting schedule is finalised by the state election commission.

Officials also stated that the civic body has been preparing for the BMC elections 2022, which include erecting pandals, preparing voters lists, and ensuring COVID-19 protocols are followed on polling day.

This development comes after the Supreme Court (SC) on May 4 directed the Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) to announce the schedule for elections of multiple local bodies in the state due for polls.

BMC in-charge of polls stated that they are making preparations of voter lists and tenders of various election-related works have already been floated and the process is ongoing. The civic body will wait for directives from the election commission and the schedule.

The number of electoral wards in the city increased from 227 to 236. For this, the civic body asked for recommendations and objections. Moreover, the BMC also received more than 800 suggestions and objections for the same.

Besides, the Maharashtra State Election Commission on Tuesday issued directives to 14 local bodies including Thane, Navi Mumbai, Brihanmumbai, Vasai-Virar, Kalyan Dombivili, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nashik, Solapur, Nagpur, Amravati, Ulhasnagar, Kolhapur, and Akola, to finalise ward boundaries, along with a timetable with deadlines for the same.
