Recently, the state assembly and Legislative Council passed two bills that permitted the Maharashtra government to exercise powers on the delimitation and ward formation for local body polls. In the aftermath of this, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been quoted in a report by the Indian Express elaborating on how they could be asked to rework the procedure of redrawing Mumbai’s ward boundaries.
The civic official in the account elucidated that they are unclear regarding the redrawing of ward boundaries, therefore, they are awaiting instructions from the state government. Just a few weeks ago, the final draft of ward boundaries was submitted by the BMC to the State Election Commission for approval.
The number of electoral wards in the city increased from 227 to 236. For this, the civic body asked for recommendations and objections. Moreover, the BMC also received more than 800 suggestions and objections for the same.
Post going through the said process, the final draft ward boundaries were submitted in the first week of March to the SEC for approval.
On the issue of OBC reservation, the state government passed a resolution in the Legislative Assembly that local body polls will not be held without OBC reservation.
The bills were unanimously cleared through the amendment to the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and the Industrial Township Act. Other amendments were made in the Maharashtra Village Panchayats and Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis Act cited accounts.
