The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) found 217,981 mosquito breeding spots across mumbai between January 2024 and May 2025.
However, dengue cases have dipped in 2025 so far, according to a data revealed by the civic body.
From January to May 6, 2025, inspections found 25,169 hatching areas in all city wards. Most of these were linked to Aedes mosquitoes. It should be noted that these mosquitoes spread dengue and chikungunya.
In the same period in 2025, BMC’s pesticide department fumigated 2,719,895 slum homes and 200,292 buildings. Between January and December 2024, the department found 192,812 breeding sites. As a response, it fumigated 7,969,424 slum dwellings and 590,444 buildings.
Mumbai reported 5,906 dengue cases in 2024. But between January 1 and May 14, 2025, only 311 dengue cases were recorded.
Efforts made by authorities to fight mosquitoes
The Public Health Department also launched a smartphone app named "Bhag Mosquito Bhag" to help raise awareness about mosquito control. It will target citizens, government offices, schools, and private companies.
A short film campaign is also being used to spread the message. Celebrities and actors from Marathi, Hindi, and other film industries are urging people to follow mosquito control steps through video messages.
In 2022, BMC had launched the “Mumbai Against Dengue” app. It teaches people how to find and remove mosquito breeding areas. Residents can use it to report and eliminate mosquito threats in their neighbourhoods. The BMC has asked citizens to download and use this app as well.
