The police helpline number 100 which is changed to 112 will be launched in Maharashtra by March this year.

With this number, the state police hope that the centralised system will bring more transparency and accountability in the police department.

This service based on GPS will be implemented – will benefit citizens of Maharashtra to avail help as soon as possible. The new system is also said to be an important step towards reducing response timing. Private call centres have been set up in Mumbai and Nagpur for this service. Based on that, this system will work. A five years contract was awarded to a private firm, Mahindra Defence, to set up both the call centres.

The Maharashtra government has decided to procure 4,500 GPS-enabled vehicles to implement the 112 emergency response helpline, state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said. At least 2,000 GPS-enabled four-wheelers and 2,500 two-wheelers will be procured to strengthen this helpline, he said.

The Maharashtra police have trained 7,000 dedicated staff for this emergency response service. As per the requirement of the project, the state police will purchase 1,500 four-wheelers and 2,000 two-wheelers.

The service will be operated by the GPS and any citizen across the state can call at 112 if they need police help in case of emergency. First, the phone will get connected to a call centre in Mumbai. After receiving the information from there, the information will be available on the laptop of the GPS van of the police in the area where the incident took place. Marshall will also be informed by a GPS present on the bottom of Marshall’s bike. This will help Marshall to reach the scene in less time.

According to sources, the network issue may also rise many times. And the representatives talking from the call centres located in Mumbai may not have information about every location across the state.
