After a long wait of five years, Thanekars to finally get some relief from the traffic congestion as the new underpass under the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) has been opened for public use. It was inaugurated by the Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday, July 31.

The four-tier infrastructure constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will ease traffic on the busy roads from Kopri to Tin Hat Naka and Bhaskar Colony to Gnanasadhana College. The length of the underpass is 36.75 metres, 21.2 metres wide and height is 4 metres.

Thane Municipal Corporation chief Abhijit Bangar said, “Going to Kopri, Anandnagar, Bara Bangla, Gnanasadhana College and Mental Hospital, one has to travel through congested roads. An average of 13,000 vehicles pass through the three-armed bridge every hour during peak hours.”

The work order was issued in 2018 and the cost of this project was INR 6 crores.

According to Shinde's instructions, the underpass road has been developed using mastic method, while the roads are made of concrete. For aesthetics, the area has been given a 3D paint job.

MMRDA has taken up another project of constructing a service road in front of Gnanasadhana College. Similarly, the governing body is involved in works related to nearby drains and culverts.
