The premium Rouge variety of apples imported from New Zealand has entered the Indian fruit market for the first time. The variety has been officially included in the APMC fruit market in Vashi. This is the first entry of this apple into India and has given a new boost to India-New Zealand agricultural trade relations.
Various fruits arrive at the Navi Mumbai Agricultural Market Committee in Vashi throughout the year. Various varieties of fruits are available depending on the season. Similarly, various foreign fruits also arrive at the APMC throughout the year. Apples from Shimla, Himachal Pradesh are arriving at the fruit market. For the first time in the fruit market sector in India, premium 'Rouge' variety apples brought from New Zealand entered the APMC fruit market in Vashi on Thursday.
At the launch event of New Zealand apples, notable attendees included New Zealand’s Consul-General and Trade Commissioner in Mumbai, Graham Rouse; Deputy Commissioner for India and South Asia, Irfan Jaffer; NZTE’s Business Development Manager, Vrunda Sonawane; APMC Vashi Director, Sanjay Panasare; and President of the Fruit Traders’ Association, Chandrakant Dhole.
This launch holds special significance in the backdrop of New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's recent visit to India, during which key discussions took place around agriculture, free trade agreements, and investment opportunities.
The dignitaries said that the agriculture sector will be a key link in cooperation between the two countries. The priority given to the agriculture sector by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Luxen was inspiring for the work. Rohan Satish Ursal of D. B. Ursal & Grandsons said that the launch of Rouge apples is not just a commercial success but also a new phase in the India-New Zealand partnership. He also expressed confidence that Rouge apples, a reddish fruit with a natural sweetness, will be in high demand from Indian consumers.

Speaking on the history of Mumbai's fruit trade, Chandrakant Dhole mentioned the tradition that has been going on for generations. Sanjay Pansare said that APMC Vashi is now becoming one of the largest markets in Asia. Graham Rouse said that the arrival of 'Rouge' apples in India in just six months is commendable and that India is the most potential market for New Zealand and a great opportunity for future collaboration.
