Cabinet Minister in the Uddhav Thackeray government, Nitin Raut recently wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray that revealed some shocking details about the working conditions of women labourers in the Marathwada region. These women majorly work in sugarcane fields.
In the letter, Nitin Raut revealed that when the 6-month sugarcane harvesting season is going on, women labourers even work during their 5-7 day menstrual cycle. Some even get their uterus so that their menstruation is discontinued and can go to work daily as they do not get their wages if they take a leave. According to Raut, the number of women who have got their uterus removed has reached a staggering 30,000.

Raut further said that the Thackeray led government should intervene in this matter on humanitarian grounds and ensure that these women get 5-7 days paid leave and do not have to resort to such extreme measures. Notably, Nitin Raut handles portfolios like PWD, tribal welfare, women and child welfare, textile, relief and rehabilitation.
Removal of the uterus, which is also known as hysterectomy has various long term health issues including blood clots, infection, bowel blockage, damage to the surrounding tissues like bladder and urethra.
