No chocolates and candy at cigarette shops: Union Health Ministry

No chocolates and candy at cigarette shops: Union Health Ministry

What's the story

The Union Health Ministry on Thursday asked the state governments to develop a system where tobacco products selling shops would need authorisation from local municipal bodies.

The ministry says that shops which sell cigarettes shouldn’t be allowed to sell other non-tobacco products like cold drinks, chocolates, candy and so on.

No shops within 100 yards of an educational institute

The authorisation is to make sure that the local municipal bodies know the exact location of the shops and make sure they’re not within 100 yards of an educational institute as ‘The Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003’ prohibits the sale of any tobacco product within 100 yards of an educational institute. Selling tobacco products, including cigarettes, to a person under 18 years of age is considered an offence.

Selling products like candy, chocolates, cold drinks at cigarette shops encourage children to buy products there and are also inclined towards smoking and consuming other tobacco products. The Union Health Ministry is trying to make sure children are kept away from smoking and tobacco consumption.

Himachal Pradesh has already started registering tobacco shops.

Will it be a good move for Maharashtra?
