The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) had announced Abhay Yojana to recover property tax arrears. However, some arrears have not been paid yet. Therefore, the corporation has prepared an action plan to bring them to justice.

Accordingly, action has been taken against 49 defaulters, who owe INR 107 crores to the NMMC in the form of property tax and the civic body has issued notices to them, an official said on Wednesday, July 7.

These include 7 properties in the Belapur division, 10 properties in the Nerul division, 2 properties in the Vashi division, 24 properties in the Turbhe division, 4 properties in the Koparkhairane division and 2 properties in the Ghansoli division.

If they do not pay the full amount within the next 21 days, direct action will be taken against them, the official warned.

NMMC spokesperson Mahendra Konde said the corporation had announced an amnesty scheme for the defaulters. However, as some of them have not come forward, notices have been issued to them. If they fail to pay up the pending amount within the stipulated period, their properties will be auctioned.

Earlier, the corporation had served notices to 26 other big defaulters, taking the count of such defaulters to 75, he added.

Moreover, Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar has undertaken various measures to increase tax collection. The department-wise process of clearing the arrears is underway and the matter is being reviewed regularly by the Commissioner as property tax is the biggest source of income for the corporation.
