Amidst the coronavirus crisis plateauing in Mumbai, data shared by the BMC shows that the number of people living in containment zones has also fallen slightly.

As of August 23, out of 1.25 crore, which happens to be the approximate population of the city, around 45 lakh people were living in containment zones and sealed buildings. However, as per civic officials, in the month of June, around 50 lakh people stayed in containment zones and sealed buildings.

At the moment, R North (Dahisar) ward has the highest number of containment zones at 64, followed by L (Kurla) ward with 60 containment zones and S (Bhandup) ward with 56 zones.

Moreover, due to the gradual decline in cases of coronavirus in the slum clusters, the numbers have considerably gone down. Meanwhile, the civic body has increased its containment zones to 604, while over 5,834 buildings and chawls have been sealed and are being self-managed by housing societies. While slums were initially where most cases were found, the corporation states that most cases are now being discovered in housing societies.

On August 24, the city recorded 743 fresh cases of the coronavirus and 20 new deaths. The COVID-19 tally now stands at 1,37,091 cases of which 18,263 are active with 7439 fatalities.
