Prior to postponing the mandatory seatbelt rule for rear passengers, the Mumbai Traffic Police issued challans to more than 200 commuters of four-wheelers across the city on Monday, November 1, which was supposed to be the first day of their enforcement campaign.

According to the data revealed by the traffic department, 204 challans have been issued in south and Central Mumbai. Of the total, the Worli traffic division has collected the most challans with 36, followed by Dongri traffic division. Meanwhile, not a single challan was issued by Dadar and MRA Marg traffic divisions.

However, upon realising that many people are not aware of the latest regulations, the traffic police, later in the day, began an awareness drive and put the decision to take action against violators from November 10.

Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that taxi unions have opposed the move as it is not feasible for them to implement it. Accordingly, they have requested more time from traffic police.

Responding to this, traffic police have also said that in taxis that already have seat belts in the rear seat, they may fine passengers if they are found not wearing seat belts. However, taxi unions have been asked to urge all their members to install seat belts in rear seats at the earliest.
