As a result of the unseasonal rainfall during the months of August-September in Maharashtra last year, farmers across the state faced huge losses due to ruined crops due to which the prices of onions gradually soared.

According to sources, the prices of onions have risen again. In all the market committees in the state, onion imports have declined by 50 to 60 per cent. In addition, onions have become more expensive in Mumbai, Thane and Pune. In the retail market, the prices have gone up to INR 50-60 per kg whereas the wholesale price of onion is INR 40 to 45 per kg. On the other hand, as per reports, the onion supplies to the wholesale agriculture produce market committee (APMC) market in Vashi have reduced by over 40 per cent, leading to a rise in prices at both wholesale and retail markets.

Moreover, the Gultekdi Market Yard in Pune receives 170 to 220 trucks of onions daily. However, at present only 70 to 80 trucks of onions are arriving. The arrival of onion has come down as the season of soft onion i.e. red onion has reached its final stage. As a result, there has been a shortage of onions in the market since last week. At present, a 10 kg onion is fetching INR 300-400 in the wholesale market.

This situation is especially problematic in the middle of a pandemic when people are out of jobs and are finding it difficult to traverse to places due to coronavirus-induced restrictions. With scanty supply, inflated prices and increasing demands, this could get worse in the days to come.
