On Thursday, the Opposition alleged that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) kept under wraps the birth of two Humboldt penguins at the city’s Byculla zoo and revealed it on September 15 to veil a Rs 15cr tender fiasco on the enclosure’s maintenance, stated a report by the Times of India.

Vinod Mishra, corporator and BJP leader stated that they were not for the deal since they believe that the maintenance must be done by a team of vets from BMC. He said that the penguins were brought five years ago, but a team from the civic authority hasn’t been roped in to look after them, but crores are being spent to hire an agency. He thinks that the announcement was made to hide the controversy that they plan to question, highlighted the account.

Ravi Raja the leader of the opposition party elaborated that whilst one penguin was born on May 1, people weren’t apprised for a while. He added that the penguins have been a prominent attraction and would have been a moment of joy for all in finding out about their birth. He questions why this was kept under wraps, mentioned the report. Rais Shaikh, SP leader in BMC thinks that it was concealment for the tender issue, but this happy news can’t polish off why exorbitant amounts are being spent on a big project.

According to the report, they stated that the zoo authorities were looking to make the announcement online on 1 October which is the fifth month of the penguin “Oreo”. An official from the zoo stated that they had been urging Mumbai’s Mayor Kishori Pednekar to make the announcement, but since the Ganpati festival was upon, it was delayed. The official then added that since the birds are now stable, they decided to make the announcement now.
