Coronavirus pandemic and the strict lockdown imposed there after by the Government of India, affected the entire country, for several months. With businesses shut and lifestyle coming to a standstill, many Indians suffered across the country. However, after nearly six months, MHA has instructed the state governments to allow activities to resume with strict protocols, under the Unlock initiative.

However, in the early stages of the lockdown, migrant workers across India suffered a lot. With no jobs and money, people had no option to leave their homes and return to their natives. But, due to lack of transportation, many labourers had to walk thousands of kilometers and travel by road, amidst the difficulties, to reach their homes.

As per the recently revealed data, post-lockdown, between March 2020 and June 2020, more than one crore workers migrated to their respective states on foot. While many workers were injured, some even lost their lives. The information was given in writing in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, September 22, 2020.

Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways VK Singh, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, said that a large number of labourers migrated from one state to another during the COVID19 pandemic. According to the Ministry of Labor, over 1.06 crore workers migrated and many of them covered the journey walking miles.

Besides this, between March-June 2020, a total of 81,385 road accidents were recorded with over 29,000 people injured. However, it is said that the ministry has failed to maintain separate data on the number of workers who have passed away due to several conditions during migration.
