The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recorded 4,454 cases and slammed with INR 1.11 crore penalty against those violating air pollution norms.

This development came after five months since the civic body empowered netizens to lodge complaints pertaining to pollution woes including burning of garbage on WhatsApp. This initiative was followed by the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's decision to launch the Swachh Mumbai WhatsApp Helpline enabled residents to register complaints related to waste management in Mumbai through WhatsApp amid deteriorating AQI.

The highest number of cases were recorded from H/West wards (Bandra, Khar and Santacruz) followed by K/West ward (Andheri, Jogeshwari and Vile Parle), M/East ward (Deonar, Mankhurd) and C ward ward (Pydhonie and Bhuleshwar) amongst others.

Meanwhile, the least number of complaints were issued against open garbage burning with 214 cases. The civic body generated over INR 6 lakh fines from such violators.

As per data, nearly 70 per cent of the total complaints were reported against those who failed to keep their premises clean under the Swachh Angan (clean premises) programme. Between November 2023 and April 18, 3163 cases were registered with the civic body collecting a sum of INR 59.71 lakh in from such violators.

Moreover, 742 complaints had been raised for dumping unauthorised construction and demolished (C&D) debris with a penalty of INR 44.41 lakh during the same period.
