Over 900 birds injured during kite flying festival in Mumbai

Activists managed to rescue over 650 birds in Mumbai. However, the BMC was criticised for lack of action to remove threads.

According to latest report, more than 900 birds reportedly suffered injuries as a result of being tangled in kite strands.

Every year during Makar Sankranti, the Kite flying festival, there is a risk of manja strands getting entangle in trees and other structures, injuring and even killing birds.

Therefore, activists in the city have stepped up to help rescue and care for injured birds, with more than 30 camps being set up to assist in the effort.

Mitesh Jain, the honorary animal welfare officer of Animal Welfare Board of India and a trustee of Karuna Trust Virar, shared the information in a statement. He also added that the actual number of birds injured could be even higher than the reported 900.

As per media reports, rescuing of over 650 birds in Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali, and Malad alone, days after the festival.

The activists who have organised these rescue efforts have been working tirelessly to save as many birds as possible.

Furthermore, it was also reported that despite being banned, the thinner and sharper Chinese thread (manja) was sold at many locations across the city.

On the other hand, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is responsible for maintaining roads, poles, and trees, has been criticised for failing to make any efforts to remove the kite strings after the festival.

To stop similar catastrophes from happening again and to guarantee the protection of every living thing in the city, the authorities must take appropriate action.
