To provide uninterrupted water supply until June to Panvel citizens, the Panvel Municipal Corporation will cut water supply once a week. This will be done between December 8 and June 15 and the municipality has announced the information about this through a press release. Therefore, Panvelkar will have to conserve water for the next seven months. Panvelkars have been facing water shortage for many years.
Due to the expansion of Panvel, the residents of Panvel have been experiencing severe water shortage for the past several years. Since the capacity of the Appasaheb Vedak Reservoir (Dehrang Dam) owned by the former Panvel Municipal Council is 3.5 million cubic metres, the municipality has to get water from other authorities on a loan basis, as the abundant water needed to quench the thirst of the people of Panvel is not available from this dam. Panvelkar needs 32 ten lakh litres (MLD) of water. 16 MLD from Dehrang Dam and 11 MLD from Maharashtra Life Authority (MJP) and 5 MLD from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) are supplied to Panvelkar.
