Major accident averted near King's Circle station

According to the eye-witnesses, the mishap took place at around 6:00 am as a vehicle accidentally ran into the height-barrier on the south-bound lane (towards Sion).

On Friday morning, The height barrier installed before the King's Circle foot overbridge got dislodged. This incident took place in the wee hours of the morning. While a major accident was averted, motorists travelling between Sion and Dadarhad to deal with major traffic especially during the peak hours.

According to the eye-witnesses, the mishap took place at around 6:00 am as a vehicle accidentally ran into the height-barrier on the south-bound lane (towards Sion). The impact casued the barrier, and one side of the pillar supporting the structure, to get dislocated. Subsequently, the pillar fell whereas the barrier continued to hang.

The repair work for started today around noon itself. However, the officials assured that the arrangements to ensure smooth flow of traffic by evening were being made.

There have been incidents in the past where tall vehicles have rammed into the King's Circle station foot overbridge. As a result, the rail authorities had installed height barriers to avoid damage to the bridge in 2018.

Earlier this month, the FOB was reopened for pedestrians after being shut down for a few months for repair work.

The traffic on the route had worsened as the accident coincided with the partial shutdown of the Sion Flyover. The bridge was shut down for public use around 5:00 am today as part of the second of eight blocks scheduled by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) for repair work.

Surprisingly, the repair work commenced last week, almost three years after the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT) had conducted a structural audit and had stated that the bridge required urgent repairs.

In the meantime, the flyover will remain shut for four days from February 27 to March 2. During the aforementioned tenure, the work on replacing the expansion joins will be undertaken.
