At a Pune city hospital, a 36- week premature infant recovered successfully from immune overreaction associated with the post-covid syndrome. In June, the infant was suffering from complications along with renal failure that needed dialysis.

According to the experts, the fetus might have transmitted the infection through the placenta, as the mother of the baby had contracted Covid-19 at 14 weeks of pregnancy. Five days after the baby was born, the condition of the baby worsened. After the baby was born on May 22, both the baby and mother had high concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.

Due to a drop in blood pressure, kidney failure the infant had a respiratory failure that needed ventilator support to survive. There was an elevation in some of the blood tests of the baby which indicated hyperimmune response. The baby, however beating all the odds survived due to the treatment with fast-acting antibodies, steroids and including dialysis.

Sachin Shah, chief neonatologist of Surya mother and Child Superspeciality Hospital in Wakad said, “This is the first case of a preterm neonate in medical literature to survive multisystem inflammatory syndrome in neonates (MIS-N) despite acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring dialysis in India”.

The baby was in the intensive care unit for nearly 16 days and was discharged on June 16, post successful recovery.
