Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has curated a budget of INR 1,600 crores for repairing roads and potholes.

Moreover, long roads are under the jurisdiction of the corporation and their maintenance and repair work is the responsibility of the civic body. Every year, torrential rains and stagnant water cause a large number of potholes on the roads. In addition, traffic congestion and overcrowding of vehicles is a problematic factor in many of these areas due to which the BMC has decided to conduct the repair work in a phased manner.

The civic body had repaired 123 km long roads in the year 2020-21. This included 57 km of asphalt and 66 km of cement concrete roads. The new Prabhadevi Marg in Mumbai, Sagbagh Marg in the western suburbs, LIC Marg, the lake road between Bhandup Police Thane to Rectifier in the eastern suburbs, Mrityanjali Marg, Bhattipada Marg has all been concreted.

On the other hand, Tribhuvan Marg in Mumbai, Road No. 25 Sion, D. in the Western Suburbs, Asphalt roads like Borge Marg, Children Complex Marg, Mhada Colony Marg, Govind Galli Marg in the eastern suburbs has been repaired.

Moreover, the commissioner has directed the assistant commissioners and senior officers across all the 24 wards in Mumbai, to complete the work within the stipulated time along with cleaning of rivers and nullahs. Similarly, a directive was given for roads and footpaths as well, where the construction, repair of roads and sidewalk should be completed at the earliest.

The civic body appoints contractors every year to desilt nullahs before the monsoon in order to avoid waterlogging. However, according to sources, the widening and deepening work on the Mithi river is 95 per cent complete. Moreover, the retaining wall of the Mithi river is 80 per cent complete due to which the carrying capacity has doubled.
